The Midland Young Leaders Challenge is open to all current high school juniors who reside in Midland County Texas. The Challenge is a unique, two-day leadership experience designed to help high school juniors unlock their potential and strengthen the skills they need to lead in school, the community, and beyond. Participants learn directly from proven leaders in the business, military, government, and nonprofit sectors while completing hands-on challenges that build on our four C's of leadership: character, communication, common vision, and caring. Students also compete for scholarships, network with peers from across Midland County, and walk away with practical tools to make a real impact.

The top student chosen as the Midland Star Leader will have the opportunity to attend the world-class Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks following the event in July.

Four Star Leadership with General Tommy Franks is a premier, world-class summer leadership intensive for high-achieving current high school sophomore and junior students. The program is based on General Franks four core principles of leadership: Character, Common Vision, Communication, and Caring. Each year, approximately 80 students from across the United States—and around the world - are selected to spend a week in Oklahoma learning directly from inspirational leaders and can earn scholarship dollars individually and as part of a team.

Four Star Leadership is unique

Students will be challenged with practical leadership and ethical scenarios and then asked to address them individually in a persuasive speech and writing competition as well as collaboratively in an Ethics Bowl competition.

The Four Star Leadership Ethics Bowl is formatted as an in-depth discussion and thought exchange on pre-determined topics and scenarios that affect our world and leaders of today. The teams’ performances are evaluated on the exchange of valid ideas and points relevant to the topics. Participants are judged on their ability to offer constructive criticism, cooperation and communication while analyzing problems and creating solutions.

The program includes team-building exercises, spontaneous problem solving and coaching in persuasive speaking and writing.

Most importantly, Four Star Leadership is fully funded, including travel, lodging, meals, and instructional costs, by our generous sponsors and there is no cost to attend for accepted students.
